بالفيديو: مرتان عقاد يتولى رئاسة كلية اللاهوت للشرق الأدنى
من قلب بيروت الصغيرة في عيون العالم والكبيرة في قلوب اللبنانيين، احتفت كلية اللاهوت للشرق الأدنى في لبنان بتعيين د. مرتان عقّاد رئيسًا، في تاريخ 22 أيلول عام 2024.
وسط جمع نخبوي مكوّن من الرؤساء السابقين للكلية وأعضاء مجلس الإدارة والهيئات التعليمية والإدارية، ورئيس المجمع الأعلى للكنائس الإنجيلية في لبنان وسوريا القس جوزف قصّاب، مع ممثلين من الحكومة اللبنانية وشخصيات أكاديمية وإجتماعية وثقافية ودينية وسياسية وأمنية وإعلامية من رحاب الوطن، ومحاطًا بباقة من الأصدقاء والزملاء وأفراد العائلة وزوجته السيدة ناديه وأولادهم، تسّلم د. مرتان عقّاد مقاليد رئاسة كلية االاهوت للشرق الأدنى، خلفًا للدكتور جورج صبرا، ما يجعله الرئيس الحادي عشر للكليّة التي تأسست عام 1932 لتكون قائمة على التعليم اللاهوتي الانجيلي في الشرق الأدنى.
د.مرتان عقّاد كان قد انضم إلى الكلية عام 1992 كطالب لاهوت، منتقلًا بعدها إلى جامعة أوكسفرد لإستحصال شهادة الدكتوراه في تاريخ الفكر اللاهوتي في الحوار المسيحي-الإسلامي، عاد من بعدها لتولي منصب العميد الأكاديمي في كلية اللاهوت المعمدانية العربية حيث أسّس معهد دراسات الشرق الأوسط، لينتقل من بعدها، مدفوعًا بحس المسؤولية الوطنية، إلى إنشاء مركز أبحاث “شركاء في الأبحاث الإجرائية” المعني بدراسات تاريخية للحروب اللبنانيّة وبناء السلام المستدام، هو اليوم يتوّج دعوته بتوليه رئاسة الكلية.
من بعد مراسم التأهيل والتبريك من المعنيين، قدّمت الفرقة الموسيقية للكنيسة الأرمنية عزفًا وترنيمًا للمناسبة، وقدّمت الدكتورة في غناء الأوبرا ريم ديب ترنيمة فرديّة، تلاها رسالة د.عقّاد الإفتتاحية المستوحاة من إنجيل متى (31:13-33) تحت عنوان: “قوة التغيير الثوري رغم الحجم الصغير”.
ركز د.عقّاد في كلمته على الدروس التي نستخلصها من مثالَيّ حبة الخردل وحفنة الخميرة بحسب المثل الذي اعتمده المسيح. فالأمور الصغيرة في الحياة بإمكانها إنتاج أفعالٍ كبيرة. أولاً، قد تعتبر هذه المكونات صغيرة في عيون العالم ولكننا مدعوّون لاستخدامها و”لوضع خبرتنا في خدمة الآخرين”. فحبة الخردل التي يزرعها الفلاح ويرعاها تنمو فتصبح شجرة بهيّة تأوي تنوّع جمال الطبيعة، ترمز إلى ملكوت الله حيث مكان تجمّع كل من يطلب محبة الله من النساء والرجال عل السواء، وكما الخبّاز الذي يستخدم حفنة الخميرة لإطعام البعض ولكن الغذاء الذي يُشبع الجسد والروح معًا هو التأثير الإيجابي في حياة الآخرين.
ولم يتجاهل د. عقاد المأساة التي يعيشها اللبنانيون في ظل عمل القلّة من أولاد مملكة الظلام. ولكن القوة الثورية في مثل المسيح والتي للبعض قد تبدو بلا قوة، مثل المحبة، القبول، الاحترام، الضيافة هي أقوى من عوامل الشر لأنها نابعة من قوة الله التغييرية التي تؤدي إلى البركة. والدرس النهائي من هذين المثلين هو في ما تمثّله شجرة الخردل أو رغيف الخبز من ضيافة إلهيّة التي نحن مدعوّون أن نقدّمها للعالم تمثّلاً بإلهنا. هي الدعوة التي وجهها د. عقاد إلى الجمع، إلى الكليات والجامعات القريبة والبعيدة، إلى الدولة اللبنانية بمكوناتها، إلى القادة الروحيين من الإسلام والمسيحيين والدروز ومن لا ينتمون إلى دين، إلى المجتمع المحيط وكل من يسعى إلى خير لبنان وبيئته، أن يتشاركوا في ابتكار الحلول لمواجهة جميع أشكال العنف التي تهدد مجتمعاتنا، وللعمل على تأسيس دولة مدنيّة عادلة إجتماعيًا واقتصاديًا وصحيًا، وتأمين مستقبل واعد لشبابنا، وبناء رؤية جديدة للخير العام الوطني.
ختامًا، نتوجه بالشكر لكل الحضور الذين تحدّوا الظروف الأمنية الصعبة التي تجتاح الوطن، وذلك دليلٌ على المحبة التي نقدّرها ونعتبرها بذرة خردل نعد برعايتها لتكون القوة التغييرية التي يحتاجها لبنان.

From Beirut, this small city in the eyes of the world yet always very present in the hearts of the Lebanese, the Near East School of Theology (NEST) celebrated the appointment of Dr. Martin Accad as its president on September 22, 2024.
The event took place in the presence of a distinguished gathering of former presidents of the Seminary, members of the board, faculty and administrative staff, and the head of the Supreme Council of Evangelical Churches in Lebanon and Syria, Rev. Joseph Kassab. Also present were representatives from the Lebanese government, figures from academia, society, culture, religion, politics, and media. Accad was surrounded by colleagues and family members, including his wife Nadia and their children, succeeding Dr. George Sabra and becoming the Seminary’s eleventh president, since its founding in 1932 as the Near East’s premier interconfessional Protestant Seminary.
Dr. Accad, who first joined NEST as a theology student in 1992 before earning his PhD in the history of theological thought in Christian-Muslim dialogue from Oxford University, has returned to Lebanon to serve his alma mater. He previously held the position of academic dean at the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary, where he founded the Institute of Middle East Studies. Following that, and driven by his high sense of national responsibility, he founded “Action Research Associate” a research center focusing on Lebanese war history and sustainable peace. Currently, his appointment as president represents the culmination of his lifelong calling.
After receiving words of blessing from key figures, the musical ensemble from the First Armenian Evangelical Church offered a performance, followed by Dr. Accad’s inaugural address based on the Gospel of Matthew (13:31-33), titled “The Subversive Power of Small.”
In his note, Dr. Accad drew lessons from the parable of the mustard seed and yeast, emphasizing that small actions can have great impact. While the world may see these elements as insignificant, they can lead to transformative outcomes when “used to serve others,” as he notes. The mustard seed, which grows into a tree that shelters diverse forms of the beauty of life, is likened to the Kingdom of God, where all who seek God’s love, men and women from all races, can find refuge. Similarly, the baker uses the yeast to nourish a few, but the nourishment that satisfies both body and soul is the positive impact that we have on other people’s lives.
Noticeably, Dr. Accad acknowledged the difficult times Lebanon faces, driven by a minority working under the influence of darkness, but emphasized that the revolutionary forces symbolized in Christ’s parables—love, acceptance, respect, and hospitality—are more powerful than evil, rooted in God’s transformative strength that leads to blessings. The final lesson from these symbols of mustard tree and bread is a call for divine hospitality, which God’s children are to emulate. Accad concluded by inviting educational institutions, Lebanon’s government, spiritual leaders from Islam, Christianity, Druze, and even the non-religious, along with the wider community, urging them to collaborate in confronting violence and building a just civil state, creating a prosperous future for the youth, and developing a shared vision for the nation’s common good.
In closing, we are grateful to all the people who attended the ceremony, despite the very challenging security conditions that Lebanon is going through, which is a testament of the love likened to a mustard seed that we, at NEST, shall behold and nurture into the transformative power Lebanon needs.
